Michelle Claase (b.1989, South Africa) is a multi-media artist based in Hong Kong where she obtained a BFA in Painting, with a minor in Film & Television, from Savannah College of Art and Design. Claase's work has featured in various group exhibitions, including: Trans.Figuration (Ko Shing Gallery), Seven (XXX Gallery), Re-Format (DreamLikeBubbles) and Disclosed (Campfire Creative). Her diasporic lifestyle has influenced her artistic practice and continues to inform her work.
Claase’s work is manifested in video, sound, text and mixed media painting. She focuses on themes of control and power dynamics by examining the use, overuse, and misuse of image and language in popular culture. Through the recontextualization of content that is often overlooked or blindly accepted, Claase aims to subverts the viewer’s passive response. Works inspired by her background as a fashion model, highlights dominance and subversion within systems of power. Her body of work asks questions about authorship, authority and the authenticity of content within the mass media.
